Service Projects

Each year, every Interact Club must completeat least two service projects; one community based and one that addresses an international concern. Below are some of the service projects that we completed in the past few years.

2006-2007

Operation Iraqi Children

April, 2007 - boxes were placed at each school in the district to collect school supplies to send to our troops in Iraq to be handed out to school aged children. A list of specific items to donate was sent home with every child in the district and the project was very successful - we even received cash contributions to complete the shopping list. The goal of this project was to further the possibility of world peace and understanding by helping our troops to reach out to young Iraqi children, allowing them to form a positive impression of America and our soldiers.

Valentine's Day at Crane's Mill

February, 2007 - Interactors visited Crane's Mill, our local senior citizens housing facility, on Valentine's Day (during the year's worst snow and ice storm) and handed out candies and flowers. The spirits of many residents, who would otherwise be alone on Valentine's Day, were lifted (and the volunteers had a great time, too).

Dictionary Project

March, 2007 - Interactors worked with the Rotary Club of the Caldwells to purchase and distribute dictionaries to every third grader in the district. (Rotary International has a long time commitment to literacy around the globe.)

Camp Merry Heart Clean-Up

April, 2007 - A team of Interactors participated in a district wide Interact Clean-Up Day at Camp Merry Heart, an Easter Seals summer camp facility for severely handicapped children in Hackettstown. We raked leaves, spread mulch and other "spring cleaning" outdoor duties.

Volunteering at Willing Hearts Consignemnt Shop

Ongoing - Interactors volunteered their time to work at Willing Hearts (a consignment shop sponsored by the Rotary Club of the Caldwells and run entirely by volunteers. The proceeds of the shop are used by the Rotary Club of the Caldwells to support local charities, service organizations and humanitarian service projects that further international goodwill and understanding.

2005-2006 - Our first full year as a club.

Sending Books to Africa - January 2006

In January of 2006, JCHS Interact worked with the Caldwell Library to send several boxes of books to an underprivileged school in Africa.

Pen-Pal Project with the Navajo Nation - 2005/2006

In order to cross cultural boundaries and learn more about the way other people live and think, JCHS began a pen-pal project with kids in the Navajo Nation. This terrific project was a result of Ann Young visiting the Navajo Nation in Arizona last summer. Thanks to Ann for organizing this great project.

"Save the Cedars" - April 2006

To celebrate Arbor Day and Earth Day, the JCHS Interact club planted approximately 140 Eastern Red Cedar saplings in the area of Caldwell known as "the cedars." During the weekend of April 29th and 30th, Interactors walked door-to-door and offered to plant trees free of charge. The club designed and sold 100 "Save the Cedars" t-shirts to cover the costs of the project.  Read more about this project. Also, check out the Star Ledger Article about this project.

Pictured here planting a Cedar Sapling on Leaycraft Lane are 5 of the many volunteers: Molly Hone, Steve Gallo, Pat Mallon, Bryan McTiernan and Maggie Mallon.
